Cerebellum Function

The cerebellum is the part of the brain that’s primary function involves coordinating motor movement, balance, and equilibrium. It is located directly above the brain stem toward the back end of the brain. The cerebellum is a powerful part of the brain that is critical to the functions of the human body.

Every person is born with a cerebellum, but it is not fully developed until the age of twenty. Throughout childhood and adolescence, this part of the body continues to grow and change. Inside the cerebellum are more neurons than the rest of the entire brain combined. It also serves as the single most rapidly acting mechanism than any other brain mechanism. It also receives the most information from the brain and is connect by roughly forty million nerve fibers. Each of these fibers sends information to the cerebral cortex and transmits information throughout the body which controls motor areas, cognitive areas, language, and even emotional functions. A recent theory produced by scientist claims that the cerebellum includes motor, mental, and sensory functions. It also performs the following processing skills: prediction making, preparing for events, computing, and aiding other parts of the brain to help it work better.

It is also believed that the cerebellum is involved in the process of automation. This is the process in which certain tasks occur automatically like sequences and movements. The cerebellum helps ensure that these movements take place without effort and with the greatest accurately.
